“Morning in Puli Township, Nantou County, Taiwan” (2002)
Acrylic on canvas
Puli Township 埔里鎮, Nantou County 南投縣, Taiwan. Nantou County is the second largest county in Taiwan. Located in the central part of the island. The most well known place in the county is Sun Moon Lake. Puli Township was near the epicenter of the infamous 1999 Chi-Chi Earthquake 集集地震. The earthquake caused 2,415 deaths, 29 missing, 11,305 severely wounded, with 51,711 buildings completely destroyed. It resulted in leaving 100,000 people homeless. I was in Kaohsiung at the time, and the earthquake was still quite strong. When my friends and I visited Puli, that I based this painting on, my old Lonely Planet guide book was useless for this town, because the entire town had been reconfigured after the quake. Puli is usually the last place I stay overnight after coming out of Taroko National Park 太魯閣國家公園, and returning to Kaohsiung 高雄市.
